He meets and befriends a demon named Ohachiyo who renames him Mappa Douji (Demon Child), to avoid confusion between his and his mother's similar names, as the kanji could be pronounced both ways. Ohachiyo teaches Mappa Douji many things, and towards the end of the story he gives Mappa Douji the demonic power of reading minds, the beginning of Hao's powerfully and dangerously gifted mind. It is not told in this story, but in the main Shaman King manga, Hao later becomes an onmyōji, which is a hint that Hao's fictional life may be based on the Japanese legend of Abe no Seimei, a famous onmyōji whose mother was also rumoured to be a yokai.

Rikuo Nura, a kid that is part human and a quarter youkai (demon), lives in a house full of spirits along with his youkai grandfather. The process used to seal the demon, however, also causes the art to disappear, and where paintings were a beautiful angel now fills the empty canvas. However, the athorities cannot allow this to go on, and Maron's best friend, who dreams of becoming a detective and is the daughtor of a police chief, will stop at nothing to capture Jeanne and comes up with a new trap every night. Then the smooth-talking Chiaki moves in to the apartment next door to Maron, at the same time as Kaitou Sinbad appears and begins to seal demons as though he were in competition with Jeanne, and with his sidekick, another angel-in-training named Access Time, he is beginning to thwart the police as well as Jeanne. After graduating from the Merdiana Magic Academy in Wales, he could be delegated the job of teaching English at the middle-school, where his homeroom course consists of 31 daughters, each quite particular in her very own manner of Mahora Academy. The show details experiences and his time in Japan as he assists them in their troubles, attains approval and respect from his pupils, and confronts magic dangers from inside as well as outside Mahora Academy. Negi's main relationship is with Asuna Kagurazaka, room mate and his pupil, who dislikes him initially but after recognizes him as a friend and becomes his companion although all the women has her very own back story and character.
